Child Safe Environment Training
Overview
The Mandated Notifiers Program was amended into SAFE ENVIRONMENT – Through their eyes. Given the legislative changes, it has become extremely important for the designated organizations which employ Mandated Notifiers, to help their employees get adequate training in Child Safe Environment.
In line with the Department of Child Protection, if you are employed as one of the following, you are a Mandated Notifier:
1. Healthcare Services Provider
Medical Practitioner, Pharmacist, Registered or Enrolled Nurse, Dentist or Psychologist.
2. Community Services or Protection Provider
Community Services Corrections Officer (Correctional Services Act 1982), Social Worker, Minister/Employee/Volunteer of a Religion or an Organization Formed for Religious/Spiritual Purposes, Teacher in School, Pre-School or Kindergarten (Education & Early Education Services Registration and Standards Act 2011).
3. Others
Employee/Volunteer in an organization that provides health, welfare, education, recreation and sports, childcare or residential services as a whole or part to children or young people. Even if you are a part of the management team or responsible for supervising the delivery of these services, you are considered a Mandated Notifier.

The course provides accredited training that will help Mandated Notifiers of your organization understand their role and responsibilities, as per the South Australian Legislation.
Course Structure & Delivery Methods
The course has been divided into a 7-hour Full Training Module and a 3-hour Refresher Training Module. If you or your team has never been through training in Child Safe Environment, as mandated by the law, we highly recommend you to enrol for the full training module. It takes a deep dive into the concept of being a Mandated Notifier and prepares you for recognizing, reporting and responding to situations of children and young people found or speculated to be found in danger or at harm.
One of the more complex parts of the legislation is the definitions, roles and responsibilities that a Mandated Notifier should be aware of. As the course proceeds, you will get to understand:
1. Background of the Child Safe Environment Policies
We start with touching on the requirements and need for Child Protection policies across Australia as well as South Australia. This session will sensitize you on how making a place safe for children and young people can be of great help and how it can be achieved with a child focus.
2. Eradication of Behavioral Biases
We all have a good degree of biases when it comes to how we perceive our environment. This part of the module focuses on identifying how our values and attitudes have an impact on how we identify or neglect child abuse. It also explains the ‘rule of optimism’ and how it plays out in identifying and acting on the suspicion of child abuse. This also helps in ensuring that no ‘profiling biases’ make your decision-making fogged.
3. Policy Explanation
We give you a detailed understanding of the Child and Young People Safety Act 2017, Child Safety (Prohibited Persons Act) 2016 as well as other policies relevant to the program. We also explain the key definitions like ‘at risk’ and ‘harm’ and also look into the types of organizations that are mandated to provide a child-safe environment. We close this session with how organizations can implement child-safe environment creation policies at the workplace and other dimensions.
4. The Risk or Abuse Identification
We start with listing out key physical and behavioural indicators that show child abuse or neglect has occurred, based on the analysis of both adults and children or young people. We also list out the key physical and behavioural indicators that might be used by the perpetrators to build relationships with children or young people; this helps in the prognosis and proactive protection of the person at risk.
5. Concepts of Rehabilitation
In this part of the module, we start focusing on the emotions and fears that may stop a child or young person from disclosing the abuse or harm. Post this, we touch on how can the process of grooming begin along with every factor to consider when a child is reporting abuse.
6. Reporting
Finally, we end the session with a comprehensive take on how to conduct thorough reporting. Here you will learn how to choose between telephone and online reporting, what makes an effective notification and how the process after reporting unfolds with the involvement of the Child Abuse Report Line.
